“Neufundland” is the German spelling of the Canadian province of Newfoundland, which is itself a translation from the Latin “terra nova.” Newfoundland is the site of the oldest known European settlement in the New World, L’Anse aux Meadows, settled about 1000 A.D. by Leif Ericsson. After a brief period as a self-governing British Dominion, Newfoundland (Neufundland), gave up self-government and became a formal part of Canada in 1949.
