This is made possible because of the wealth of natural resources in the Territories – gold, diamonds, and natural gas. The Northwest Territories (Nordwest-Territorien) have an estimated population of 42,514. The inhabitants are polyglot, speaking languages as diverse as Inuit, First Nations’ various tongues, English, and French. The Territories were created in 1870 when the land was transferred from the Hudson’s Bay Company to the Canadian Confederation. An enormous region at first, pieces were gradually carved off to create the surrounding provinces of the prairies and Arctic. The Territories are not considered a province and thus lack equivalent legislative representation.
