The largest and second most populated province in Canada, Quebec is often what first comes to mind when Canada is mentioned. French explorers first discovered Quebec in 1603 as their expedition traveled up the St. Lawrence River. One of the explorers, Samuel Champlain, led his own expedition in 1608, and consequently founded Quebec City. When Northern American territories were ceded to Britain in 1763, the Britains, concerned that the French-speaking population of Quebec would side with the American rebels, officially recognized French law and French language in the province. For this reason, French is currently the official language in Quebec, and French civil law is still practiced today. Today, Quebec is a popular tourist destination. It features dozens of quaint and picturesque towns, an open and diverse landscape, and a host of unique cultural experiences. There are also outdoor sporting activities to be enjoyed in every season. Quebec City, in particular, is a vibrant, very cosmopolitan city, known for its great festivals, restaurants, art galleries, museums, and night life.
