Bordered by Manitoba to the east, Alberta to the west, and North Dakota and Montana to the south, the Canadian province of Saskatchewan is a host to an abundance of wildlife, natural beauty, culture, and friendly people. The name Saskatchewan means "swiftly flowing river", and comes from a Scree Indian name for the Saskatchewan River. Saskatchewan boasts vast, open plains to the south, a large swath of boreal forests to the north, and large active sand dunes in the northwest and southwest. Though landlocked, Saskatchewan's rivers and lakes make it a mecca for fishing, canoeing, and water sports of every kind. It is also widely known for its hiking, camping, and other outdoor sporting opportunities. Incorporated in 1905, Saskatchewan is a relative newcomer. Once a mainly agricultural society with little to offer in the way of culture, Saskatchewan has since tapped into the richness of its diverse history, and has become a community that not only celebrates its many peoples and traditions, but art and culture in general.
